Clinicopathological analysis of patients with non-muscle invasive bladder cancer

Summary
Aims: The aim of the retrospective study by the authors is to assess the properties of non-muscle invasive (NMIBC) bladder tumours within our field of care. With our results, we would want to improve the diagnosis of bladder tumours, as well as the morbidity and mortality of our patients.
Material and methods: Between 2009 and 2013, 305 bladder tumour patients were operated with transurethral resection (Tu-TUR) in Heves County, Hungary. Based on the 1973 WHO classification in our study paper, the proportion of NMIBC patients is 64.05%. On the average, the incidence of NIMBC is twice as high in men as in women.
Results: Analysing the characteristics of cystoscopy physical appearance of tumours that have been confirmed as non-muscle invasive, we found tumours larger than 3 cm in 20% of the cases. 30% of the tumours showed multiplex appearance at the time of discovery.
Of the non-muscle-invasive tumours, 20% of the 180 patients studied the tumour recurred. These were 58.33% pT1-G1, 30.55% pT1-G2, 8.33% pTa-G1 and 2.79% pTa-G2.
The higher the age group, the worse the urine cytological record (p=0.036) and grade (p=0.023) became.
We found a weak correlation between tumour size, location, and grade (p=0.26). For larger sizes, a higher grade was established.
Statistically, we also found a higher T value for larger size (p=0.2) and for larger sizes, the tumour recurred earlier (p=0.26).
Conclusion: The authors would like to give a comprehensive picture of the bladder cancer patient population in Hungary especially in Heves Country and to improve the early and accurate diagnosis and treatment of patients based in their data.
