Summary
Introduction: One of the possible treatments for patients with intermediate-risk and high-risk prostate cancer is radical prostatectomy.
Patients and methods: In our study, we examined the effectiveness of radical prostatectomy in patients with intermediate-risk and high risk prostate cancer. Data from 913 patients with intermediate-risk and 527 high-risk prostate cancer patients who underwent radical prostatectomy in our institute between 01.01.1996 and 01.01.2019 were processed retrospectively.
Results: After surgery, biochemical progression occurred in only 14.5% of cases and the development of both local recurrences and distant metastases was very low. Following radical prostatectomy, the high-risk group had significantly higher incidences of locally advanced tumours and margin positivity. There was no significant difference between the two groups in the frequency of either biochemical progression or local recurrence. After surgery, secondary interventions (excluding salvage irradiation) became significantly more necessary in the high-risk group.
Conclusion: For intermediate- and high-risk prostate tumours, radical prostatectomy provided excellent oncological effectiveness. In our study, we confirmed the results of previous studies about the effectiveness of radical prostatectomy for intermediate- and high-risk prostate cancer patients.
