Summary

In the study requested by the editors, the author evaluates and compares the international data on the epidemiology of bladder cancer and the statistical data on domestic urological surgery. Data on the incidence and mortality of the disease differ in individual countries and regions, domestic data are only available regarding the number of patients and the number of interventions. It can be stated that these numbers have decreased significantly during the COVID years. Based on the comparison of the number of transurethral resections performed for bladder cancer and the number of patients, it can be concluded that the number of interventions performed on one patient in Hungary shows an increasing trend. The number of our radical cystectomies has not changed substantially in the last decade, and based on international data, the number of cystectomies in other countries is similar. As regards urinary diversions after cystectomy, international data show the dominance of incontinent diversion, but the rate of continent bladder substitution – although their rate has been decreasing in recent years – remains below the international level in our country. The data indicate an increasing proportion of patients with advanced bladder cancer.
