Summary

Overactive bladder syndrome (OAB) is a condition that affects approximately one-sixth of our population and makes everyday life miserable. The regrettably high rate of long-term dropout from treatment methods aimed at reducing symptoms has been known for a long time, and several reasons have now been identified. Although we cannot significantly change the disturbing side effects of drug therapies, there are many ways to improve patients’ therapeutic adherence by choosing appropriate communication strategies and providing detailed patient education.
Previously thought to be of unknown origin, several pathological processes have been identified in the background of OAB, which may facilitate the so-called phenotyping of the different subtypes of OAB. Expanding our knowledge in this direction may help in patient education, the development of individualized therapeutic strategies, and the development of more well-founded patient selection criteria in future research.
