Summary

Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) is a multimodal pathway that provides guidance for improving the perioperative care and outcomes of patients undergoing surgery. In 2013, the ERAS Society published its original guidelines for radical cystectomy, taking much of the data from the colorectal literature. Over the past decade, increasing interest in ERAS has fuelled radical cystectomy-specific ERAS research, including recent prospective randomized controlled trials (RCTs). The aggregated data indicate that ERAS contributes to the improvement of complications, the reduction of the length of hospital stay, and increases patient satisfaction. Several modified versions of the ERAS pathway exist, but there is still a lack of consensus on the efficacy of individual ERAS components and protocol standardization
